Tourism

Mayerthorpe is an agricultural community offering an abundance of unique experiences for tourists who would like to experience cowboy heritage, ranching, horseback riding, agricultural fairs, and challenging marathons, while celebrating the lives of those peace officer who lost their lives in the line of duty for our community, province and nation.  Mayerthorpe is located where Highway 22 known as The Cowboy Trail, and Highway 43 known as the Canamex Trade Corridor intersects.  The region is a tourist’s playground with many destinations to take your breath away while imprinting images of beauty and grandeur.

Voted #9 as one of the most ‘Adorable Small Towns In Alberta You Need To Visit‘.

TOURISM ENHANCEMENT GRANT

In January, 2012, the Town of Mayerthorpe gave approval for a “Tourism Enhancement Grant”. Money has been allocated for community groups and individual entrepreneurs who are developing a tourism-related project that would benefit Mayerthorpe and area. Money can be made available for advertising, for events, and for up-grading structures such as fences and bleachers that are used for the benefit of the community or for other events.

As you drive along Highway 22, take notice of the new Cowboy Trail sign!

The history of the Cowboy Trail: In the early 1880’s, cowboys were drawn to the eastern slopes of Alberta’s Rocky Mountains because of the moderate climate and the vast rangelands that were ideal for cattle.  This “Cowboy Trail” snakes along Highways 5, 6, and 22 and goes through the heart of the Town of Mayerthorpe, ending approximately 6 km north of Mayerthorpe.

The newly installed attraction includes a custom metal sign designed by local artist, Tom Johansson. You’ll also find a brief description of The Cowboy Trail and the “Cowboy’s Prayer for the End of the Trail”, taken from “The Cowboy Trail, A Guide to Alberta’s Historic Cowboy Country” by D. Larraine  Andrews.  For more information on the Cowboy Trail please visit http://www.thecowboytrail.com/destination/mayerthorpe/

This park is the result of a group of dedicated individuals that came together after a national tragedy to develop a tribute to the four fallen RCMP, acknowledge their sacrifice and honor them. The design of the memorial will center on the number four; the four officers, four winds and the four directional points of a compass representing the RCMP’s presence in all parts of Canada. Four life size bronze statues depicting the fallen officers will be the focal point of the park. Each officer will be placed facing out in a directional point on a compass. For more information Contact (780) 786-2347.

Rangeton Park is a beautiful, rustic campground nestled along the Pembina River, just off the Cowboy Trail (Highway 22) between Highways 16 and 43. On the second Friday in June you will find musicians from all over Alberta gathering for the Annual Famer’s Day Festival. The Festival showcases local talent from a large radius around the Park and lasts for the whole weekend. This is a great family festival! The park is a great get-a-way for your rustic camping experience. You will not find power or water hookups here, but you will find a beautiful, scenic, serene place where you will hear Canada geese and other birds, perhaps view a deer quietly grazing, or a moose passing through. Rangeton Park is a local treasure, waiting to be discovered by passers-by who take the opportunity to check it out. They surely will not be disappointed.

Both a restaurant and gift shop, the Trading Post has a licensed dining room where you can enjoy homestyle cooking. The gift shop features unique gifts and crafts something for everyone.

A well-maintained, 9 hole, grass greens course, it is said to be one of the nicest in the area. With a licensed dining lounge, driving range, power carts and club rentals, this course covers all your golfing needs. There is an adjacent campground that has 28 well developed sites for rent.
